Medical Resume

Recently I was asked what’s the most important piece of information you should include in your medical resume. I think it’s important to be selective about what kind of information you put in a resume. We sometimes get resumes and people put all sorts of hobbies in, ballroom dancing, their religious affiliations, and how many children they have. Does that information belong in a resume?

Customized Targeted Resumes Win

When we say be specific, be selective. Selective means only use information that is directly relevant to your long-term goal in the medical field. If you had a part-time job in high school or if you do volunteer work on the side that is not related to your career, don’t put it in. Only put in things that are directly specifically related to your career goal.

Remember to keep it brief and not to include information not related to the job you are applying for. Do not forget you typically have only 2 pages, you don’t have that much space to put all that other information. And remember if there is more detail, you could talk about it in your job interview so keep your resume short. You could even have another addendum perhaps, but keep the resume to 2 pages and be as specific as possible.

Interests and Hobbies

The interests and hobbies section should not be underestimated. Keep away from boring clichés and show hobbies that can demonstrate a range of skills relative to a job or transferable to a workplace setting. If possible, pick hobbies that are a little out of the ordinary so you can stand out from the crowd.
