Volunteer Section In Your Resume

Volunteer Section In Your Resume

The volunteering section in your resume is often falsely considered to be the fluffy part of your resume. That is to say, many job seekers think of this “volunteer” section of their resume as not that important. In reality, this sample resume section can be seen as one of the most and port sections in your CV. Below, we discuss why you should make sure to include volunteer work in your resume and how it can help you stand out from the rest of the job applicants.

Why is the volunteer resume section so important? Social responsibility. All high-profile successful employers produce what is known as the corporate social responsibility report. The “CSR”, as it is known rivals the importance of the annual report for companies. Companies with strong CSR’s demonstrate that they are good corporate citizen and contribute to their community. These employers look for employees who have a strong sense of social responsibility and citizenship and will represent them well in the community. The companies with the good salaries, stock option plans, benefits and pension plans are also the ones who care about social responsibility.

When an employer sees a resume sample with a strong track record of social responsibility, they assume and associate positive personality traits with the job applicant. Jobseekers who show that they volunteer suggests that they are ethical, responsible, hard-working, individuals who take initiative and manager time well. With the good volunteer section, this is the kind of image that you will create in your resume.

What If You Don’t Volunteer?

There so many applicants that I have spoken to who don’t volunteer in their community. In some situations, they are busy working parents who just don’t have the time. My resume advice is for these applicants to look for volunteer opportunities that don’t have a lot of are part of your commitment to the time. Some nonprofits, charities, and so forth will allow you to volunteer on a one-time basis, annual events, or with a very small commitment of a few hours a month. If you can do this and attitude resume definitely brings your resume out the next level.

How The Volunteer Section Can Hurt You.

I just finished listing all the benefits of including a volunteer section in your resume. But, there are situations where a volunteer resume section can hurt you. Make sure you avoid including volunteer information affiliated with extremist groups. I’m not telling you what you should or should not do your personal time, and this is not a judgment on your choice of political, religious or social beliefs. What I am trying to say is employers don’t want to see one of their employees on the front page of the news vandalizing something to make a political statement
My next advice is controversial. If at all possible, my advice would be to stay away from including religious volunteer information on your sample resume. While I know is not illegal for an employer to discriminate based on religion, why give them a chance to? The only exception is if you achieved something truly great through a religious charity that benefits the whole community regardless of their own religion. In this case, it might be okay to include this volunteer history on your resume. For example, suppose you volunteered to feed the homeless through your local church and really accomplished a huge achievement. In this case, I would likely give some thought including this on your resume. The rule of thumb is to user judgment. For example,

“served 4000 hot lunches to the homeless in five years for the union gospel”

is a great accomplishment to include on your resume. However, “volunteer photographer at annual nudist convention of America” might draw the focus away from your “credentials”. Now I just realized that I may have unintentionally just insulted all my nudist readers out there. That was not my intention, the point is at this moment nudism is not quite as mainstream, and it may cause a distraction on your resume. When the time comes that employers have company bowling teams as well as nudist teams, then you could consider, including your sample nudist volunteer activities, then.
Until next time, good luck on your job search.
